Sitting on the Southbank just west of The Oxo Tower, Bernie Spain Gardens are a story of two halves, the North Side catering mainly for tourists, and the South Side for the residents who are the raison d'etre of the Gardens.
The gardens were originally created in the 1980s, as a result of a campaign by local community group Coin Street Action Group, co-founded by the late Bernadette Spain. The Group successfully protested against offices being built on the site, having already seen much of the local residential and community space area be lost this way. The site was then purchased in 1984 by Coin Street Community Builders, and the original gardens were created, opening in 1988.
Now over 35 years old, the gardens are due a revamp. The new design uses dynamic curves punctuated by bold straight lines to create a space that invites you to explore.
Trees are at the forefront of the design, with shady boulevards, an Urban Glade and a Woodland Walk. Enriched with striking planting, they create a sanctuary to explore and relax in away from the hustle and bustle of the Southbank.
The design makes the North Side not just a stopping point, but a destination, encompassing a Market Place, outside dining and an expansive south-facing Terrace with steps leading down to the Water Walkway.
The South Side provides spaces to pause and breathe, with residents able to enjoy a community Plaza, Ornamental Gardens and Water Play features, with the existing allotments being updated and integrated into the design.
